Why two calculators give you different Lilith signs

You looked up your Black Moon Lilith on two sites and got two different signs. Both results are almost certainly correct, because there are two accepted ways to calculate that point and they disagree for about a third of all birth dates. This article explains where the disagreement comes from, how large it gets, and which of the two numbers to keep.
The thing being calculated is a point, not an object
Black Moon Lilith is not a body you could photograph. The Moon travels around Earth on a stretched ellipse; the near end of that ellipse is the perigee and the far end is the apogee. The longitude of the apogee is what astrologers call Lilith. Since there is nothing physically there, no observation can settle the correct position — only a convention for computing it can.
Two conventions took hold instead of one.
Mean Lilith treats the apogee as an average. The Moon's orbit is constantly perturbed by the Sun, and smoothing those perturbations produces a tidy point that travels through the zodiac at a nearly constant rate.
True Lilith, also called the osculating apogee, uses the apogee as it actually stands at a given instant. It lurches, reverses, and overtakes its own average.
The other end of the same orbit
A short aside that helps the geometry stick. The apogee has a counterpart at the near end of the orbit, the perigee, and that one is familiar to people who have never opened a birth chart: when a full Moon coincides with the perigee, newspapers call it a supermoon and the disc looks slightly larger than usual. The apogee is the same line drawn in the opposite direction, towards the point where the Moon is furthest away and appears smallest.
The line between those two ends is not fixed in space. It rotates slowly around the zodiac, taking close to nine years for a full circuit, which is why Lilith moves at all. What the two conventions disagree about is where exactly that rotating line points at a given instant — the averaged answer or the instantaneous one.
How the two behave in practice
Both points were run against the ephemeris for 1940–2025, one sample per day, 31,412 dates in all.

The average gap between them is 10.88°, and the widest gap in eighty-six years of daily samples is 30.07°. Thirty degrees is exactly one zodiac sign, which produces the practical consequence worth remembering: true Lilith sits either in the same sign as the mean one or in the sign next door. Two signs apart never occurred in the sample.
Two dates that show how little the gap matters
Take 11 April 1963, noon in London. Mean Lilith sits at 28.99° of Libra and true Lilith at 4.96° of Scorpio. The two are less than six degrees apart — close enough that an astrologer would call them the same spot — and yet the boundary between Libra and Scorpio runs right between them, so the two readings disagree completely.
Now take 5 December 1958. Mean Lilith at 2.03° of Taurus, true Lilith at 29.53° of Taurus: twenty-seven and a half degrees apart, nearly the widest gap this pair ever reaches. Both sit in the same sign, and every site you consult will tell you the same thing.
Put those two dates side by side and something useful falls out. How far apart the numbers are and whether you end up with two different signs turn out to be separate questions, and the second one has little to do with the first. What decides it is where the nearest sign boundary happens to fall — which makes the whole disagreement feel arbitrary from outside, because in a sense it is.
A quick way to tell which version you were shown
If the site labelled your Lilith retrograde, you were looking at the true version, because the mean one never moves backwards. If it gave you a degree that barely shifts when you change the birth time by an hour, that is the mean version at work — it covers about a tenth of a degree in a whole day, while the true one can cover two.
Larger programs such as Astrodienst can produce both, but the choice sits in the calculation settings where a casual visitor rarely goes. Smaller calculators usually show one number without saying which.
Why both conventions survived
It would be tidy if astrologers had eventually settled on one method, and the reason they did not is that each side has a real argument.
The case for the mean apogee is stability. The point moves predictably, completes the zodiac in about eight years and ten months, and its position barely depends on how precisely the birth minute is known. In a practice where birth times are often reconstructed rather than recorded, that matters a great deal.
The case for the osculating apogee is fidelity. Averaging smooths away the actual geometry of the orbit, and a chart is supposed to describe a specific moment rather than a tidy model. Both positions are defensible, which is precisely why the argument has lasted for decades.
For a reader the practical upshot is undramatic: both versions are computed correctly, both appear in professional software, and choosing between them is a question of astrological school rather than of accuracy.
Which one to keep
Western practice leans on mean Lilith, and if you want a single answer to carry around, that is the reasonable one to take. It moves evenly, its position is stable, and it is what most software displays by default.
Reading both descriptions is still worth the five minutes. People whose two versions disagree often recognise themselves more in the second sign than the first, and there is a mundane reason for it: the two signs describe neighbouring territory, and the boundary between them happens to fall on the date they were born.
One case deserves separate mention. If your birth time is unknown, the mean sign is still safe to use, since it settles for the whole day in 99.63% of dates. True Lilith is shakier there — it changes sign within a single day for 7% of dates, so without an exact hour its sign stays provisional. The house cannot be calculated from a date alone in either version, because houses are measured from the Ascendant and that travels the entire circle every twenty-four hours.
Where the measurable part ends
Everything above concerns arithmetic. The gap between mean and true Lilith is a quantity anyone can reproduce in any ephemeris-based program, and it does not depend on which astrological school you follow. What the Black Moon means in a chart is a different kind of claim: it belongs to a tradition of interpretation rather than to measurement, and different schools read it differently. Numbers will not settle that argument.
