How to read it
What Venus–Mars compatibility means
In synastry, one person's Venus is compared with the other person's Mars. Venus stands for taste and what moves you, Mars for drive and the way someone makes the first move. When one lands on the other, you get an attraction that is hard to put into words.

Venus: what attracts you
- Venus in a sign shows which kind of attention, looks and behaviour you find attractive. In a couple, your partner's Mars answers it: the pull is strongest when that Mars sits in the same or an allied element, or in an exact aspect to your Venus.
Mars: how a person goes after it
- Mars describes pace and drive: how someone makes the first move and how they take a no. A fire Mars does it fast and directly, a water Mars through mood and trust.
Two pairings, not one
- Everyone has both Venus and Mars, whatever their gender, so there are two pairings: the first person's Venus with the second's Mars, and the second's Venus with the first's Mars. One can click easily while the other grinds, and then one of you warms up faster.
The Venus–Mars aspect
- An aspect is an exact angle between the planets: up to 8° for a conjunction or opposition, 6.5° for a trine or square and 4.5° for a sextile. Trines and sextiles flow, squares and oppositions bring friction and heat.

Five aspects
Venus–Mars aspects in synastry
An aspect counts when the angle between one person's Venus and the other's Mars is close to one of five exact values. Here is how each one usually feels in a couple, and how often it shows up one way among our 100,000 couples.
Venus conjunct Mars
orb up to 8°
one way: 4 couples out of 100
- One person's Venus and the other's Mars sit at almost the same point, so the way one acts lands right on what turns the other on. Couples with this aspect usually notice the pull from the first meeting, and when they argue, it is mostly about pace, since neither is short of desire.
Venus sextile Mars
orb up to 4.5°
one way: 5 couples out of 100
- A 60° angle gives easy, friendly interest: flirting starts by itself and getting going is simple, though the spark here is more often fanned by talk and play than by touch alone.
Venus square Mars
orb up to 6.5°
one way: 8 couples out of 100
- A 90° angle sets one person's desire and the other's way of acting at right angles, so the couple gets heat and irritation at once: a fight easily ends in bed, and bed in a new fight. Couples with a square last for years when they learn to agree on pace before resentment piles up.
Venus trine Mars
orb up to 6.5°
one way: 7 couples out of 100
- A 120° angle usually links Venus and Mars of the same element, and the rhythms match with almost no tuning: one starts the way the other wants. Because it comes so easily, a trine is sometimes taken for granted, and couples with it are more likely to get bored than to fight.
Venus opposite Mars
orb up to 8°
one way: 5 couples out of 100
- One person's Venus and the other's Mars stand across the wheel, and the attraction runs on contrast: each sees in the other what they lack. Such a couple turns on easily and pulls apart just as easily, so a lot depends on who is willing to give way first.
Numbers
How common this is
We calculated 100,000 random couples born between 1950 and 2008 with the same engine that runs this page.
| What the couple has | Share of couples |
|---|---|
| At least one Venus–Mars aspect | 49.2% |
| An aspect in both directions | 8.6% |
| Venus conjunct Mars | 8.8% |
| A trine or sextile | 22.7% |
| A square or opposition | 23.0% |
| One person's Venus and the other's Mars in the same sign | 15.7% |
| Both pairings in the same or allied elements | 25.1% |
Your Sun sign says little about attraction. Among couples whose Sun elements are 'incompatible', both Venus–Mars pairings still get along in 24.8% — almost as often as in all couples.
Swiss Ephemeris, tropical zodiac, a random birth moment between 1950 and 2008 for each person. Aspects and orbs are the same as in the calculator; 'either way' means the first person's Venus with the second's Mars or the other way round. For couples of about the same age (up to 3 years apart) the shares barely change — by less than 2 points.

Questions
Venus and Mars in a couple: common questions
How do I calculate Venus–Mars compatibility?
Enter both birth dates and cities, plus the birth time if you know it. The calculator finds each person's Venus and Mars signs and compares one person's Venus with the other's Mars in both directions: elements, a shared sign and the exact aspect with its orb. The result is free and immediate, with no sign-up.
What does Venus conjunct Mars mean in synastry?
A conjunction means one person's Venus and the other's Mars sit within 8° of each other. It is the most direct sign of attraction: the way one acts lands exactly on what moves the other. It is not common: a conjunction in at least one direction appears in 8.8% of couples.
Is a Venus square Mars synastry bad?
No. A square creates tension, and in a couple tension often feels like heat and excitement. The difficulty is elsewhere: pace and tastes diverge, and without talking it quickly turns into resentment. One person's Venus squares the other's Mars in 7.9% of couples, more often than any other aspect between these planets.
How often does a couple have a Venus–Mars aspect?
About half the time. In our run of 100,000 random couples, at least one Venus–Mars aspect turned up in 49.2%, and an aspect in both directions in only 8.6%. So having no aspect means nothing bad: attraction is then read through the elements and signs.
Can I calculate it without a birth time?
Yes. Venus and Mars cover no more than about a degree and a half a day, so their signs almost never depend on the hour of birth, and an aspect only does when the angle sits right at the edge of the orb. If a planet changed signs that day, the calculator flags it. Only the houses and the Ascendant need a birth time.
Which matters more for compatibility, Venus or Mars?
Neither on its own. Compatibility happens where they meet: one person's Mars has to land on the other's Venus. That is why the calculator shows two pairings — one direction can click while the other does not, and then one of you warms up faster.
Which Venus and Mars elements go together?
The same and allied elements click most easily: fire with air, earth with water. Both pairings work like that in 25.1% of couples. The other combinations are not 'incompatible': they carry more friction, and the couple has to agree on pace more often.
How is this different from sexual compatibility?
This page looks at Venus and Mars only. The full couple reading adds the pace of both Mars placements, the Moon, which covers what comes after closeness, and each person's Lilith. One button carries your data over, so you do not type it twice.
