Solar Return Chart Location: What Actually Changes
The moment is the same everywhere; your house system decides how much the city matters

The Sun returns to its natal longitude at one single instant, and that instant is the same everywhere on Earth, so casting a solar return for another city changes the clock on the wall rather than the event itself. Everything that depends only on the moment stays identical: every planet sits at the same degree, in the same sign, holding the same aspects to every other planet, whether you compute the chart for Ulm or for Tokyo. What the city does change is the frame the planets are hung in, because the ascendant, the midheaven and the house cusps are all derived from where you stand while that moment passes. There is one more variable that most discussions leave out entirely, and it turns out to matter as much as distance: the house system you use decides how large the effect of moving actually is.
What a different location changes, and what it leaves alone
The cleanest way to see this is to compute the same return several times over. The chart below belongs to Albert Einstein, born 14 March 1879 at 11:30 local mean time in Ulm, a record rated Rodden AA because the time comes from his birth certificate. His 2026 solar return falls at 02:17 UTC on 14 March.
Here is that one instant, written down in four cities.

Notice that in New York the return lands on 13 March, the day before his calendar birthday, while in Tokyo it lands late that morning. Those are four descriptions of one moment rather than four different moments.
The planets themselves stay where they are. At that instant the Sun sits at 353.51° in Pisces, the Moon at 293.32° in Capricorn, Mercury at 340.82° in Pisces, Venus at 9.50° in Aries, Mars at 339.06° in Pisces, Jupiter at 105.10° in Cancer and Saturn at 3.32° in Aries, and those figures hold for every city in the table, because the positions are computed from the Earth's centre and the observer's address never enters the calculation.
Relocating a solar return therefore cannot change a single aspect between two planets, and a square stays a square wherever you compute it. The only aspects that do change are those involving the angles, because the angles are the part of the chart the location produces.
Why the clock disagrees when the moment does not
The Earth turns once in roughly twenty-four hours, which means the sky overhead rotates by about fifteen degrees every hour and by roughly one degree every four minutes. The ascendant is simply the point of the ecliptic rising over your horizon, so it is a reading of that rotation taken from your particular spot, and moving east or west changes the reading immediately.
Latitude does something different and less obvious, since it changes how evenly the twelve houses divide, and a house boundary — a cusp — that shifts even slightly can hand a planet sitting near it to the neighbouring house. Near the equator the houses come out close to equal, while further north or south they distort, and some grow considerably larger than others. That distortion is why the house system matters so much in the next section.
At extreme latitudes the arithmetic stops working altogether. Above 66.56 degrees, the latitude of the Arctic Circle, quadrant systems like Placidus and Koch can fail to produce cusps at all, and our own calculation falls back to Porphyry when that happens. We have tested this fallback rather than the accuracy of every system at every latitude, so treat charts computed near the poles with more caution than the rest.
Your house system decides how much location matters
Take Einstein's 2026 return and move it 120 kilometres east, from Ulm to Munich, then ask a mechanical question: how many planets end up in a different house?

Four of the five systems produce the same chart. In Placidus one planet crosses a cusp, which is enough to change what a reading says about it. The ascendant moved by under two degrees in every case and stayed in Capricorn throughout, which is where the difference comes from: in whole sign nothing at all happens until the rising sign itself changes, whereas Placidus cusps drift continuously and a planet sitting near one can be tipped over by a modest move.
A long move overwhelms this distinction completely.

So the honest answer to "does location matter" depends on a question people rarely ask first, which is how far you moved relative to the system you read in. Crossing an ocean rearranges the chart under any system. Driving to the next city rearranges it only under Placidus, and even then only for whatever happens to sit near a cusp.
One detail from the first table is worth keeping: the ascendant reads 6.47° Capricorn in Ulm under all five systems, because house systems disagree about cusps and not about the ascendant.
Which location should you use
Three positions circulate, and they rest on different premises.
One school uses the place you currently live. Cafe Astrology puts it in one sentence: "When working with Solar Returns, where the native lives at the time of the return is generally the location used for the Solar Return chart." The premise is that the return describes the year of a life that is lived somewhere in particular.
A second reads the chart for wherever you will physically be when the Sun returns, which is the premise behind the whole practice of travelling for a birthday. It is also the position with the least neutral literature behind it: when we checked the search results for solar return relocation in August 2026, the top of the page was almost entirely paid consultations, and a page selling a service cannot honestly conclude that the service might not do anything.
The oldest position keeps the birthplace and leaves it there, which sits consistently with the fact that several traditional timing techniques, profections and firdaria among them, are not relocated either. The astrologer Leah Whitehorse published an article on relocating solar returns in 2014 and then added a note to it in August 2018 saying that she had changed the way she works and now uses the birthplace, and a public reversal of that kind is a fair indication that the question stays unsettled among people who work with these charts daily.

How long do you have to be there
No consensus exists here either. Some hold that you need to be there at the exact minute, others that roughly a day is enough, others that you should stay a day either side of the return, and others again that a brief visit accomplishes nothing. They disagree because they disagree about what makes a location count in the first place.
What a calculation can settle is narrow and worth being clear about. It can tell you what the chart looks like for any place and any moment, to the degree and the minute. It cannot tell you whether standing in that place changes your year, because an ephemeris is a table of where the planets were, and a table of positions contains no claim of that kind.
What this means in practice
If you have moved abroad and want to know which chart is yours, the tables above at least tell you what is at stake. Your planets and their aspects are yours regardless, the angles and houses are the part under discussion, and the size of the disagreement depends on your house system as much as on the distance.
