True vs mean Lilith: which one to use

The Black Moon, or Lilith, is not a physical celestial body, but rather the apogee of the Moon’s orbit—the point where it is farthest from Earth. It cannot be seen through a telescope; it exists purely as a mathematical point, which is why astrologers use two distinct methods to calculate its position.

Mean Lilith is an averaged, "smoothed-out" point. It glides steadily through the zodiac, always moving forward. This is the default calculation used by the vast majority of Western astrologers.

True Lilith, on the other hand, accounts for the actual fluctuations in the Moon's orbit caused by the Sun's gravity at the exact minute of your birth. Due to these gravitational tugs, its motion can slow, stall, or even briefly move backward.

The difference between the two can be quite significant—up to 30 degrees. In fact, for roughly a third of people, Mean and True Lilith end up in entirely different zodiac signs!

Two Points on a Single Orbit

The Moon does not orbit the Earth in a perfect circle, but rather in an elongated ellipse. The closest point on this path is the perigee, and the farthest is the apogee. Astrologers project this apogee onto the ecliptic—the Sun’s apparent path across the sky—and call this mathematical point Lilith.

The lunar orbit is inherently unstable, constantly "rocked" by the gravitational pull of the Sun and other planets. Because of these perturbations, the position of the apogee can be calculated in two ways. The first method averages its position over a long period, giving us Mean Lilith. The second captures its exact position at a specific moment in time—this is True Lilith. In astronomy, this is known as the "osculating" apogee: it represents the apogee of the orbit the Moon would follow if all gravitational disturbances were to vanish instantly at the exact moment of calculation.

Why True Lilith Loops, But Mean Lilith Does Not

The answer lies with the Sun. Its gravitational pull constantly tugs at the Moon, causing the perigee-apogee axis to swing like a pendulum. Mean Lilith represents the smoothed-out trajectory of this motion: it advances steadily at a rate of about 0.11° per day, completes a full circuit of the zodiac in nearly nine years, and never reverses course. True Lilith, by contrast, mirrors the actual, real-time fluctuations of the orbit. Its average daily motion is roughly 2.1°, but it moves in fits and starts, spending more than half its time in retrograde motion—that is, moving backward.

To gauge the scale of these oscillations, we calculated both points using daily ephemerides (astronomical tables) spanning the years 2000 to 2009. The data shows that True Lilith catches up to and crosses Mean Lilith every 32 days on average, with the shortest interval at 28 days and the longest at 37. Over that ten-year period, the maximum deviation between the two points reached 30.07°. Furthermore, True Lilith was moving in a retrograde direction on 56% of those days.

Since thirty degrees equals exactly one zodiac sign, this yields a simple and practical rule of thumb: True Lilith will always fall either in the same zodiac sign as Mean Lilith, or in an adjacent one. They never stray further apart than that.

Six Charts: Where the Points Diverged and Where They Aligned

The data for these examples is drawn from the Astro-Databank, using only charts with a Rodden rating of A or AA, meaning the birth times are verified by official documentation. Two charts stand out. David Bowie’s points are a mere 5.4° apart, yet they end up in different signs because they straddle the Sagittarius-Capricorn boundary. Barack Obama’s, on the other hand, are 17.8° apart—more than three times the distance—yet both stay firmly within Leo. It just goes to show that crossing a sign boundary is what actually matters, not just the raw degree difference.

The broader data backs this up. Out of our sample of 111 notable figures with verified birth times, Mean and True Lilith landed in different signs for 37 of them (about a third). They also fell into different Placidus houses in 37 cases. And in 63 of those 111 charts, True Lilith was retrograde at the time of birth.

Which Lilith Should You Choose?

If you’re looking for a single, straightforward answer, go with Mean Lilith. Here’s why.
It’s the standard in Western astrology, and most astrology software displays it by default. When you look at someone else’s natal chart or read an astrological interpretation, this is almost certainly the point you’ll see—even if the astrologer doesn't explicitly state which calculation method they used.
It’s also remarkably stable when it comes to birth time. Over a 24-hour period, Mean Lilith moves by a mere tenth of a degree. In fact, it changes zodiac signs on a given birthday only 0.37% of the time. For True Lilith, that number jumps to 7%, meaning its position is only an approximation unless you know your exact time of birth.
There’s also a quick way to tell them apart: the letter "R" (for retrograde). Mean Lilith is never retrograde, so if you see an "R" next to the position, you are definitely looking at True Lilith.

That said, True Lilith isn't "worse" or less valid. It’s simply a different calculation method with its own internal logic. It appeals to those who want to know the Moon's exact orbital position at the precise minute of their birth, without any long-term averaging. It’s a matter of astrological tradition, not a debate over accuracy.

Mean vs. True: Schools, Authors, and the History Behind the Debate

The debate over which Lilith is "correct" predates any modern calculator—and it’s often a case of people talking past each other. The reality is that astrology software frequently hides three entirely different objects under this single name.

The first is the apogee of the lunar orbit, which is the focus of this article. This concept was introduced to French astrology by Dom Néroman. In 1937, he defined the Black Moon as the second focus of the lunar ellipse—a point that, when projected onto the ecliptic from Earth, aligns closely with the actual apogee.

The French school that followed him—most notably Joëlle de Gravelaine, with her 1985 book Le Retour de Lilith (The Return of Lilith) and her custom ephemerides—worked primarily with the Mean point. To this day, the vast majority of French-language astrological literature still relies on this calculation. Later authors like Luc Bigé and Jacqueline Eme took this a step further by giving the points distinct names: they refer to the Mean point as the "Unicorn" (Unicorne) and the True point as "Lilith."

The naming history gets even muddier thanks to the legend of the "Dark Moon"—a hypothetical second satellite of Earth. In 1898, a Hamburg astronomer named Georg Waltemath claimed it existed and even predicted the exact date it could be observed. His peers, however, quickly debunked the claim, dismissing the observations as pure error.

Nevertheless, in 1918, the English astrologer Sepharial included this entirely fictional object in his calculations and named it Lilith. Even though this has absolutely nothing to do with the actual lunar apogee, this is exactly how the name eventually migrated over to the mathematical point of the Moon's orbit.

To make matters even more confusing, there is also the very real asteroid 1181 Lilith, discovered in 1927 in Algeria and named after the French composer Lili Boulanger. Renowned astrologer Demetra George, author of Dark Moon Mysteries, dedicates an entire course to untangling this. She draws a clear line between three distinct entities: the asteroid, the hypothetical moon, and the orbital apogee, demonstrating how three completely different "Liliths" can actually be at play in a single natal chart.
But let’s circle back to the main question: why is the modern debate specifically focused on Mean versus True?

There’s another crucial technical detail that many people in this debate simply aren't aware of. Our calculator, like most modern astrology software, is built on the Swiss Ephemeris, the gold-standard library for astronomical calculations. What’s often overlooked is that the Swiss Ephemeris actually calculates the lunar apogee in three different ways.

Beyond the Mean and Osculating (True) methods, there is a third: the Interpolated (or "Natural") apogee. The library’s author, Dieter Koch, derives this by tracking the actual, physical moments the Moon passes through apogee. The documentation explicitly states that the wild 30-degree swings of the osculating point are merely an "artifact" of a simplified mathematical model, and that the actual physical apogee never deviates from the Mean by more than five degrees.

What to Do When the Signs Differ

Read the interpretations for both points. As we’ve already established, True and Mean Lilith never stray more than one zodiac sign apart. Adjacent signs often describe the same area of life from different, yet complementary, angles.
Blending the two interpretations usually yields the most complete and nuanced picture. The same logic applies to astrological houses: in our sample, these points fell into different houses for a full third of the individuals.
